Plot summary
The Sullivan family reaches New York from Ireland by way of Canada, where Johnny had been working as an actor, and moves into a rundown Hell's Kitchen walk-up shared with drug addicts, drag queens and a solitary tenant nicknamed the man who screams. Frankie, the couple's young son, has died, and Johnny, who no longer feels much of anything, auditions without luck while Sarah takes a job in an ice cream parlor. Ten-year-old Christy, who believes her dead brother has granted her three wishes, records the family's days on a camcorder as the money runs short and the city swelters.

- The film is dedicated to director and co-writer Jim Sheridan's late brother, who died at the age of ten, and the daughters Christy and Ariel are based on Sheridan's daughters, co-writers Naomi and Kirsten Sheridan.
- Rather than have the art department change license plates to make the film period-accurate, Jim Sheridan gave Christy a camcorder and shifted the setting to the 1990s while keeping the tone of the 1980s.
