Plot summary
Jorge, the domineering boss at a posh Atlanta salon, takes the credit for the work of his stylist Gina Norris, a widow who moved from Chicago with her daughter Vanessa. Gina quits and buys a run-down shop of her own, hiring an electrician named Joe, the renter upstairs, to rewire it. The staff she inherits are headstrong: Lynn, the only white stylist, does not fit in easily, least of all with Chanel, and a teenager named Willie hangs around filming and flirting with the women. Gina's sister-in-law Darnelle, in trouble with an abusive boyfriend, is put to work at the shop to pay off a debt.
