Plot summary
In 1572, Gregory, the last of the Falcons, imprisons the witch Malkin underground. That knightly order once shielded mankind from supernatural threats, and Gregory alone remains. Malkin breaks free, kills his apprentice William and retreats to a mountain fortress, restoring the beauty of her disfigured sister Bony Lizzie and gathering an army of minions. A centennial blood moon, a week away, would make her unstoppable. Gregory, now a roving witch hunter called a spook, needs a new apprentice and chooses Tom Ward, a seventh son born to a seventh son. In a town, Tom sees Alice, whom he knows from his clairvoyant visions, about to burn as a witch, and frees her. Tom's Mam gives him a necklace and tells him never to remove it.

- Legendary Pictures gave $5 million to the recently bankrupt visual effects company Rhythm & Hues Studios in February 2014 so it could finish its work on Seventh Son.
- A. R. Rahman was announced as composer of Seventh Son alongside Tuomas Kantelinen, but left in July 2013 to score the Tamil film Kaaviya Thalaivan, which let him innovate with folk music.
- Sam Claflin was in negotiations to play the apprentice Tom Ward, but the talks fell through in June 2011 and Ben Barnes took the part.
