Colin Firth

Biography

Colin Firth is an English actor and producer who was born in Grayshott, Hampshire, and trained at Drama Centre London. He made his film debut in Another Country (1984) and was counted among the Brit Pack of young British actors in the mid-1980s. The role of Mr. Darcy in the BBC's 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice turned him into a household name, and he later played Mark Darcy across the Bridget Jones films, Harry Bright in Mamma Mia! (2008), and secret agent Harry Hart in Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and its sequel. His performance as King George VI in The King's Speech (2010) brought him the Academy Award for Best Actor, after an Oscar nomination for A Single Man (2009), which won him a BAFTA Award and the Volpi Cup. He received Primetime Emmy nominations for Conspiracy (2001) and The Staircase (2022), and founded Raindog Films in 2012.

Firth was announced as the voice of Paddington Bear but withdrew in June 2014, saying the character simply did not have his voice.

  4. Getting ready for a role

Firth accepted the part of Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones's Diary because he saw it as a chance to lampoon his own Mr. Darcy character.

  5. Behind the camera

Firth co-founded the production company Raindog Films in 2012 with music executive Ged Doherty, and its first feature was Eye in the Sky.

  6. Beyond film
