Plot summary
Wallace Avery works as a FedEx floor manager in Florida, unhappy in the job and in his failed first marriage, and estranged from his teenage son Kevin. He tells his girlfriend Mina nothing of his plan to disappear. He pays a man for a forged passport and a second identity, Arthur Newman, leaves his driver's license and shoes at a beach to fake a drowning, and drives toward Terre Haute, Indiana, where he means to work as a resident golf pro. At a motel he finds a woman slumped beside the pool, near death from a dose of cough syrup, and takes her to a hospital. She calls herself Mike and refuses the bus he offers her back to North Carolina.
