Plot summary
An estate left by his grandfather brings Dorian Gray to Victorian London, where the charismatic Lord Henry Wotton tells him that life should be spent in pursuit of pleasure and draws him into the city's social round. Henry's friend Basil Hallward, a society artist, paints Gray's portrait and gives him the finished painting. Looking at it, Gray declares that he would trade anything, including his soul, for lasting youth. He falls in love with the actress Sibyl Vane and proposes marriage, but Henry's influence and a visit to a brothel turn him away from her. His pleasures grow reckless, and he drifts away from Basil.
