Trailer

Plot summary

Ebenezer Scrooge is a surly businessman in Victorian London who wants no part in Christmas. His business partner Jacob Marley died seven years earlier. On Christmas Eve he declines an invitation to dine with his nephew Fred, his only living relative, and dismisses two men who have come asking for charitable donations. He allows his clerk Bob Cratchit Christmas Day off only reluctantly. That night Marley's ghost visits him, burdened with chains, and explains that a person's conduct in life decides what awaits them afterward. Marley warns that three spirits will come to Scrooge over three nights and that he must take their warnings to heart.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about A Christmas Carol (2009)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • High production and marketing costs meant the film lost the studio an estimated 50 to 100 million dollars, and forced Disney's head of worldwide marketing to resign.
  • Cary Elwes played several minor background roles, but because Jim Carrey performed Scrooge and all three ghosts himself, Elwes also had to physically stand in for one of those characters during scenes where two of them appeared together on screen at once.
  • This was one of only two films ever made by Disney's ImageMovers Digital studio before Disney shut the whole operation down over poor box-office returns.
  • Its home video release broke new ground by putting out a Blu-ray 3D disc the same day as the regular Blu-ray, one of Disney's first entries into the 3D disc market.
  • Disney promoted the movie with a nationwide train tour run in partnership with Amtrak, starting in Los Angeles and stopping in 40 cities before ending in New York.
