Plot summary
Stevie Branch, Christopher Byers and Michael Moore, three eight-year-old boys, disappear from their neighborhoods in West Memphis, Arkansas, a deeply religious, working class town. A search the next day finds their bodies, bound and beaten. The violent nature of the crime convinces the community and the police department that a satanic cult is responsible, and the town's grief fuels a demand for arrests. A month later, three teenagers, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr., are taken into custody after Misskelley says during an interrogation that he took part in the murders. All three say they are innocent, and the case moves toward trial. Investigator Ron Lax examines the case, looking for the truth.

- The film dramatizes the real West Memphis Three case: Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley were convicted of killing three eight-year-old boys during the Satanic panic; Echols was sentenced to death and the other two to life, and all three were released after eighteen years.
- In the real case, Echols, Baldwin and Misskelley walked free in August 2011, after nearly 20 years in prison, under an Alford plea that left them still convicted felons.
