Plot summary
Retirement is on Larry Cook's mind, and the Iowa farmer wants to hand his acres to his three daughters, Ginny, Rose and Caroline. Ginny and Rose accept happily and, with their husbands, take on the running of the farm. Caroline has gone to Des Moines to practice law and refuses her share. Her refusal enrages her father, who rejects her. Ginny and Rose are left to work the land without their sister, and Larry, who no longer takes part in the daily work and is losing his grip on farming life, grows hostile to the way they manage the place.
