Plot summary

English artist Colin Ware learns that his fiancée Vera plans to marry someone else, so he flies to America and picks the most hopeful place name he can find, ending up in Hope, Vermont, in autumn. He checks into an inn and passes the time sketching the eccentric residents; asking a store for rubbers instead of erasers puts the locals on alert. Joanie, who manages the inn, sees his distress and calls Mandy, who works at a nursing home, to distract him. Mandy loves butterflies and is the opposite of the reserved Colin. The townspeople, whose days follow familiar routines, take an interest in the pairing.
