Plot summary
In British India in 1947, cholera kills Mary Lennox's parents and the girl is left behind in the family's home, forgotten in the turmoil of Partition. Her uncle, Archibald Craven, takes her in at Misselthwaite Manor in Yorkshire. His housekeeper, Mrs Medlock, forbids her to explore the house, and Mary must stay in her room at night. Mary is allowed outside to explore the estate and the woods, where she meets a stray dog she names Jemima. Cries and wailing in the corridors at night lead her to Archibald's bedridden son, Colin Craven, who talks of having a hunchback and being unable to walk. Mary tells him about the garden, but he is uninterested. Following the dog into the mist, she frees her from a trap, then climbs over a wall and lands in a hidden garden.
