Plot summary
Stanley Crawford has made a career of exposing fraudulent spiritualists, and on stage in Berlin he performs as Wei Ling Soo, a Chinese magician. His old friend Howard Burkan asks him to travel to the French Riviera, where the wealthy Catledge family has been taken in by Sophie Baker, a young medium. Sophie's mother travels with her, and Brice Catledge, the family's son, is smitten enough to want to marry her. Stanley, whose fiancée Olivia shares his skepticism, means to unmask Sophie, yet she describes private details of his own life, and at a séance in the Catledge home a candle rises into the air.
