Plot summary
Max Perkins is an editor at Scribner's in New York, where he has already brought out books by F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. He lives just outside the city with his wife, Louise, and their five daughters. In 1929 a sprawling manuscript called O Lost, by an unknown writer named Thomas Wolfe, reaches his desk, and Perkins decides to publish it. The novel appears as Look Homeward, Angel and sells well, and the editor and the author become close friends. Wolfe is also involved with Aline Bernstein, a married woman twenty years older than he is, and the publication puts pressure on that bond.
