Plot summary
Bridget Jones is 32, single and unhappy about her weight, and works as a publicity assistant at a London publishing house. At a New Year's party given by her parents she meets Mark Darcy again, a barrister she has known since childhood. He considers her foolish and vulgar, while she considers him arrogant and rude. She resolves to turn her life around and starts a diary about giving up cigarettes and drink, losing weight and finding a man. At work her womanizing boss, Daniel Cleaver, flirts with her heavily. An important book launch goes badly when her speech insults the guests, and she runs into Mark and his colleague Natasha there. Daniel rescues her, and the two begin dating.

- Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett, Emily Watson, Rachel Weisz and Cameron Diaz were all considered for the role of Bridget Jones; Weisz was thought too beautiful for the part. Toni Collette turned it down because she was starring on Broadway in The Wild Party, and Kate Winslet, at 24, was judged too young.
- Colin Firth was persuaded to accept the role of Mark Darcy by the in-joke between the Bridget Jones films and the 1995 television adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, which gave him the chance to ridicule and liberate himself from his Pride and Prejudice character.
- Renée Zellweger worked on her accent with Barbara Berkery, who had coached Gwyneth Paltrow for Shakespeare in Love, gained 20 pounds (9 kg) for the part of Bridget Jones, and worked at the producers' request as a trainee in the publicity department at London publisher Picador to prepare.
- Director Sharon Maguire, a friend of Fielding's, was reportedly the model for the character Shazzer in Bridget Jones's Diary, a name the film's DVD commentary notes is English slang for Sharon.
- Gabrielle's "Out of Reach" and Geri Halliwell's "It's Raining Men" were two previously unreleased songs on the Bridget Jones's Diary soundtrack that became hit singles; Halliwell's went to number one on the UK Singles Chart, her fourth consecutive chart-topper.
- Stansted Airport doubled as New York's JFK Airport in the film, while Syon House in Brentford featured as the venue for the Darcys' anniversary party.
