Plot summary
In the Middle East, the probationary agent Lee Unwin dies on a mission while saving his superior, Harry Hart. Years afterward, Lee's son, Gary 'Eggsy' Unwin, lives with his mother and her abusive partner, Dean, and ends up in police custody over a car that belongs to one of Dean's friends. He uses the number on the medal Harry gave him as a boy. Harry secures his release, handles Dean and his gang, and tells Eggsy that he works for Kingsman, a secret intelligence agency, as Galahad. Another agent, Lancelot, has just been killed by the assassin Gazelle. Harry nominates Eggsy for the empty place, and Eggsy enters training under Merlin while Harry follows a trail that leads to the billionaire Richmond Valentine.

- Vaughn opted out of directing X-Men: Days of Future Past to focus on Kingsman, calling it "a really tough decision"; he reasoned that if he did not do it, somebody else would wake up and do a fun spy movie, leaving him with a screenplay no one would want to make.
- A teaser trailer was planned in which all six actors who had played James Bond, Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, discussed the need for a new generation of agents; all agreed to appear, but the plans were shelved due to Connery's dementia.
- Samuel L. Jackson took the villain role partly because of a career-long aspiration to appear in a James Bond film; reasoning that was unlikely, he saw this as a chance to play a great Bond villain, and gave the character a lisp inspired by his own childhood stutter.
- Vaughn watched several James Bond films and noticed that the sexual innuendos "always come from the men", which led him to write the scene where Princess Tilde explicitly requests anal sex; it drew accusations of misogyny, and an alternate version cutting it was made during filming.
- For the church fight Vaughn first intended to use "November Rain", but found the song darker than he realized and its guitar solo too short; after an online search for "great long American guitar solos" the scene was shot with "Free Bird" instead.
- In most of Latin America and Indonesia the film was released with the church scene, considered narratively important by Vaughn and film critics, excised almost completely, leaving only the set-up and immediate consequences.
- In September 2013 Vaughn cast Sophie Cookson as the female lead, preferring a then less-established actor, and reportedly chose her over Emma Watson and Bella Heathcote.
- Principal photography began on 6 October 2013 in Deepcut, Surrey, on a budget reported to be one-third of the $200 million budget of Skyfall.
