Plot summary
On November 30, 1962, George Falconer, a British English professor living in Los Angeles, is still grieving Jim, his partner of sixteen years, who died eight months earlier in a car accident. Jim's family did not tell George about the death and would not let him attend the funeral. George has decided to end his life that evening, and he spends the day putting his affairs in order. He recalls his years with Jim while meeting Charley, his best friend from England, who wants a deeper relationship with him; Kenny Potter, a student who shows interest beyond the classroom; and Carlos, a Spanish immigrant and aspiring actor.

- An early poster showing Colin Firth and Julianne Moore lying side by side, arms and shoulders touching, led to claims that the film's gay content was being played down in its marketing. A new poster moved Moore into the background, and a re-cut trailer dropped a shot of George and Jim kissing while keeping a kiss between George and Charley.
- The Los Angeles house where the character George lives in the film is a real one: it was designed in 1948 by John Lautner, the first house he built after leaving Frank Lloyd Wright.
