Plot summary
An elderly Briton, Guy Bennett, tells an American journalist, Julia Schofield, in Moscow how his life took the course it did. He recalls his final year at a public school in 1930s Britain, where he and Tommy Judd were friends and outsiders: Judd an intellectual Marxist who refused to take part in school traditions he saw as oppression, Bennett open about being gay. Bennett hopes to become a God, one of the two top prefects, as a step toward a diplomatic career, and that year believes he has fallen in love for the first time, with James Harcourt, who returns his feelings. Their housemates tolerate both men. A scandal involving another pupil then focuses the school on the behavior of all the boys, and the army-obsessed house captain Fowler sets himself against Bennett and Judd.

- Eton College refused to let the production shoot on its grounds, so the school of the film was assembled elsewhere: the Old Schools Quadrangle at Oxford University, with an extra fountain trucked in, plus the Bodleian Library and Brasenose College. Many interiors came from Althorp, the Spencer family seat.
