Plot summary
Harry Deane is a British art curator who works for Lord Lionel Shabandar, a billionaire collector who treats him badly. Harry wants to get even, and he settles on a scheme: persuade Shabandar to buy a forged Monet, Haystacks at Dusk, which would pair with the genuine Haystacks at Dawn that Shabandar already owns. To make the forgery convincing, Harry enlists the Major, an art forger, and travels to Alpine, Texas, to find PJ Puznowski, a rodeo queen whose grandfather captured Hermann Göring in 1945. Her story would explain how the painting left Nazi hands. The three stage a photograph of the fake canvas in her grandmother's mobile home, hoping a magazine in Shabandar's media empire will publish it and draw his attention.

- Joel and Ethan Coen took the script between films and produced a "radical overhaul" that moved the story to the United States. They were told the film was intended specifically for Hugh Grant, and half an hour after submitting their completed script they learned Grant had passed on it.
- In March 2004 Jennifer Aniston was announced as the female lead alongside Ben Kingsley, with Bo Welch directing. After the commercial failure of Welch's 2003 adaptation of Dr. Seuss's The Cat in the Hat, Universal lost faith in the project and put it into turnaround.
- Alexander Payne was in talks to direct, reuniting with his Election star Reese Witherspoon, but was reluctant to work on a script he had not written. Witherspoon would stay only if Mike Nichols or Robert Altman took over, and Altman backed out before signing, feeling the material was not suitable for him.
- Alcon Entertainment had Gerard Butler lined up as Harry Deane with Richard LaGravenese directing, but LaGravenese wanted a script polish, which took a long time and removed a lot of the work the Coen brothers had done, and the project was placed on hold again.
