Plot summary
Christine Lucas is forty. She wakes in bed next to a man she does not know, in an unfamiliar house, and he tells her he is Ben, her husband. A car accident, he says, left her with brain damage; her memory of everything after her early twenties is gone, and each morning clears it again. Dr. Nasch, a hospital neurologist, treats her. He lends her a camera so she can set down her thoughts, rings each day to prompt her to view what she recorded, and asks her to keep it out of Ben's sight.
