Plot summary
Adrian LeDuc owns a failing revival movie theater in a rundown quarter of Buenos Aires and lives in a shabby apartment building full of eccentric, quarreling tenants. Ticket sales no longer cover his costs, so he advertises for someone to share the rent. The applicants disappoint him until Jack Carney, an American, takes the room. Adrian is withdrawn and spends his time on old movies; Jack is outgoing and soon befriends the neighbors, whom Adrian insists cannot be trusted, and becomes involved with Laura, whose husband is often away. Claudia, who sells tickets at the cinema, sits on a political committee investigating a string of murders that echo killings by death squads during Argentina's military dictatorship.
