Plot summary
Dr. Daniel Kellner works in cybersecurity for the Wardex Corporation, a government contractor that has collected evidence of extraterrestrial encounters for decades. He takes an extraterrestrial artifact and the Archive, Wardex's hidden record of those encounters, and uses the artifact to hold off Noah Scanlon, the company's chief executive, long enough to get away with his girlfriend, Jane. In Kansas City, television meteorologist Margaret Fairchild is getting ready for work when a cardinal enters her home. Afterward she can sense people's thoughts and speak languages she has never studied. During a live weather broadcast she slips into an unknown language, and the footage draws Wardex's attention.

- Emily Blunt said she was told her alien-language dialogue would be enhanced with AI, so she instead used vocal training to perform the whole scene live in one four-minute take, though Spielberg later denied AI was ever planned, saying he "would never have used AI" for the film.
