Plot summary
Cécile de Volanges, fifteen years old, was raised in a convent so that she would stay chaste, and Gercourt is going to marry her. He kept the match from the Marquise de Merteuil, the wealthy widow who had been his secret lover, and she wants revenge for the hypocrisy of a man who demands a virgin bride while keeping a mistress. She proposes that her own former lover, the womanizer Vicomte de Valmont, rob Cécile of her virginity before the wedding, which would humiliate Gercourt. Valmont cares nothing for Cécile. He is chasing Madame de Tourvel, a married woman famous for her virtue, who has been warned about him and keeps her distance. So Merteuil offers him a wager: bed Tourvel and he may also have Merteuil; fail and he must shut himself in a monastery.
