Plot summary
Mary Lennox wakes in her family's home in colonial India to find her parents dying of cholera and the servants dead or fled, and English officers soon send her to England. She arrives at Misselthwaite Manor on the Yorkshire moors, the home of Archibald Craven, a friend of her late father. No one there defers to her, and she is lonely until Martha Sowerby, the maid, tells her of a walled garden that was locked after the death of Lilias Craven, its key thrown away. Mary begins searching for the door. At night she hears sobbing through the house, and the servants insist the sound is the wind.
