Plot summary
April Epner is a religious elementary school teacher in Brooklyn. Her husband Ben leaves her, and her adoptive mother Trudy dies the next day. Then a man named Alan approaches her on behalf of Bernice Graves, who hosts a local talk show and says she is April's biological mother. Bernice claims April's father was Steve McQueen, and April resists at first. She has also grown close to Frank, a divorced man whose child is in her class, over long telephone conversations. Their first date is a party at Bernice's apartment. April has always wanted a child, and Bernice keeps pressing for a bond between the two of them.

- Helen Hunt spent ten years trying to get Elinor Lipman's novel to the screen. After first reading it she tried to interest numerous studios in the material, and her unsuccessful efforts led her to begin writing the screenplay and raising funds to produce it herself.
- Longtime friend Matthew Broderick agreed to play the relatively small role of Ben for scale, and his commitment led Hunt to approach Bette Midler and Colin Firth, who were impressed by her passion for the project and agreed to work for minimum pay as well.
