Plot summary
In 1950s Ireland, Bernadette 'Benny' Hogan, Eve Malone and Nan Mahon are friends as children in the small town of Knockglen. Benny is the only child of the local tailor, Eve was raised by nuns after being orphaned, and Nan's beauty is expected to define her. When Nan's family moves to Dublin, the three are separated, then meet again six years later at university there. Benny's parents, protective of her, want her to keep living at home and to marry her father's assistant, Sean Walsh. Benny instead falls for Jack Foley, a rugby player who studies medicine. Eve's education is paid for by the Westward family, who employed her father, and she owns a cottage in Knockglen while spending weekdays at a convent in Dublin.
