Plot summary
Joe, a lecturer in English literature, takes a teaching post in Genova, Italy, after his wife Marianne is killed in a car accident. He moves there with his daughters, sixteen-year-old Kelly and ten-year-old Mary, and the three settle into a flat in the crowded streets of the city. They take day trips to the beach and hire an Italian tutor for piano lessons, while Mary stays close to her father and carries memories of her mother. Kelly begins dating a local teenage boy and keeps the relationship from Joe. Joe, meanwhile, weighs two romantic possibilities: Barbara, a colleague from his Harvard student days who helps the family with translation and everyday needs, and a young Italian student in his literature class who makes her interest in him clear.
