Plot summary
Lord Edmund Blackadder's New Year's Eve dinner at Blackadder Hall in 1999 brings Archbishop Melchett, Archdeacon Darling, Major George and Lady Elizabeth to his table, and he wagers £10,000 with each of them that a time machine of his, built to plans attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, can bring back any item of history they name. They ask for a Roman centurion's helmet, the boots the Duke of Wellington wore at Waterloo, and 200-year-old underpants. The voyage is a trick: Baldrick has already taken those things from his master's storage, the machine is a prop, and the two hide inside while their guests believe they are watching a departure. When Blackadder opens the door, the machine has truly traveled, and a dinosaur stands before them.

- In 1999, before the film's Millennium Dome premiere, a dispute broke out between Sky and the BBC over who had the right to broadcast it after the Millennium year: Sky said it had paid £4 million for exclusive rights, while the BBC said the stars had agreed to do it on the basis that it would air on BBC One.
- Because Blackadder: Back & Forth was rated PG rather than 15, a number of scenes were cut from the final edit.
- Blackadder: Back & Forth is the only Blackadder story shot entirely on film and with no laugh track, though a laugh track was added for its 2002 BBC One broadcast.
- The short was commissioned for a specially built cinema, the SkyScape, erected southeast of the Millennium Dome on the Greenwich peninsula in South London.
