Plot summary
Daphne Reynolds is seventeen and lives with her mother Libby, a wedding singer, above a restaurant in Manhattan. Years earlier Libby met Henry Dashwood in Morocco and married him in a Bedouin ceremony; the couple went to his family estate in England, and Libby left without telling him she was pregnant. Daphne heads to London to meet him. Henry has given up his place in the House of Lords and is campaigning for a seat in the Commons, advised by Alistair Payne, and is engaged to Alistair's daughter Glynnis. At a hostel Daphne meets Ian Wallace, an aspiring musician. Henry is astonished to discover that he has a daughter, and his mother Jocelyne welcomes her, while Glynnis and her daughter Clarissa feel threatened by the newcomer.
