Plot summary
Cedric Brown, a widowed undertaker in Victorian England, has seven unruly children who have driven away seventeen nannies with their practical jokes. The children obey almost no one besides their father, though Evangeline, the household's kindly scullery maid, who cannot read, is an exception. On a stormy night a mysterious woman arrives at the door and introduces herself as Nanny McPhee, and the children, led by Simon, the eldest, try their tricks on her. Each lesson they learn removes one of her facial defects. Their great-aunt, Lady Adelaide Stitch, who provides the family's money, threatens to take one child into her custody and to withdraw her support unless Cedric marries again within the month.

- Emma Thompson's work on this film prevented her from reprising her role as Frasier Crane's first wife, Nanny G., on the spin-off series Frasier, in the episode "Caught in the Act", so Laurie Metcalf played Nanny G. instead.
- Thompson confirmed in 2018 that she had written a script for a third film, set in modern-day Britain, but the studio thought it too expensive to make given the sequel's worse-than-expected performance, despite the sequel taking $93,000,000 at the box office.
