Plot summary
At the height of their success in 1957, comedians Lanny Morris and Vince Collins co-host a 39-hour polio telethon in Miami, then fly to New Jersey to open a showroom at a hotel run by Sally Sanmarco. In their suite, the body of Maureen O'Flaherty, a college student from Miami who had interviewed them for her newspaper, is discovered in a bathtub. The death is attributed to a drug overdose and neither man is charged, but the partnership breaks up. Fifteen years later, Karen O'Connor, a journalist who met the duo as a young polio survivor at the telethon, is hired to ghostwrite Collins's autobiography. She promises Maureen's mother that she will learn how her daughter died, and anonymous chapters of a book Morris is writing reach her.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Where the Truth Lies (2005)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Where the Truth Lies received an NC-17 rating in the US over its threesome and lesbian sex scenes; director Atom Egoyan called the decision "a violent act of censorship," and star Kevin Bacon argued that far more violent R-rated films "slide by...no problem," with both suggesting homophobia influenced the ruling since the film also deals with repressed homosexuality.
- Novelist Rupert Holmes based the film's fictional comedy duo, Lanny Morris and Vince Collins, on his childhood idols Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, even though the murder-mystery plot around them is entirely invented.
