Plot summary
Ambrosinus, a Druid of a secret brotherhood, keeps watch over Julius Caesar's sword and is made tutor to Romulus Augustulus, the boy newly crowned as Emperor. Rome is breaking apart. Romulus and his father Orestes turn down the Gothic warlord Odoacer's demand for a third of Italy, and the Goths storm the city. Wulfila kills Orestes and his wife and seizes Romulus; Aurelius, general of the Nova Invicta Legion, is struck down and left for dead. Odoacer spares the boy and sends him to exile on Capri under Ambrosinus and a Gothic guard. In a hidden chamber on the island, Romulus comes upon Caesar's sword, forged in Britain and meant for the one destined to rule. Aurelius, the surviving soldiers Vatrenus, Batiatus and Demetrius, and Mira, an agent of the Eastern Empire, rescue them and take them to a seaport.
