Biography

Vanessa Redgrave is a British actress whose career has spanned eight decades. Born in Blackheath, London, she came from an acting family and made her stage debut in 1958, rising to prominence with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1961 as Rosalind in As You Like It. Her film breakthrough came with Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment (1966), which brought her first Academy Award nomination. She won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Julia (1977) and earned further nominations for Isadora (1968), Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), The Bostonians (1984) and Howards End (1992). Her many films include Blow-Up (1966), Camelot (1967), The Devils (1971), Murder on the Orient Express (1974), Prick Up Your Ears (1987), Mission: Impossible (1996), Venus (2006), Atonement (2007), Coriolanus (2011) and Foxcatcher (2014). On stage, she won an Olivier Award for The Aspern Papers (1984) and a Tony Award for Long Day's Journey into Night (2003).
