Robert Stephens
Biography
Robert Stephens was an English actor who worked with Britain's Royal National Theatre in its early years. Born in Bristol in 1931, he won a scholarship at eighteen to Bradford Civic Theatre School and made his professional debut with the Caryl Jenner Mobile Theatre. Tony Richardson saw him perform, and he joined the English Stage Company at the Royal Court for its first season in 1956. On Broadway he appeared in Epitaph for George Dillon and earned a Tony nomination for Best Actor in a Play. His films included A Taste of Honey (1961), Cleopatra (1963), Romeo and Juliet (1968), The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes (1970) and The Asphyx (1972). At the National Theatre he played Atahuallpa in The Royal Hunt of the Sun. The Royal Shakespeare Company cast him as Falstaff in Henry IV, a role that won him the 1993 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actor. He was knighted in 1995 for services to drama.

Stephens began his professional career with the Caryl Jenner Mobile Theatre. In 1951 he spent a year at the Royalty Theatre in Morecambe, taking on more challenging repertory parts.

In the 1981 BBC Radio serialization of The Lord of the Rings, Stephens gave his voice to the character of Aragorn.

Stephens directed the British premiere of John Patrick Shanley's Danny and the Deep Blue Sea in 1985. The production was staged at the Gate Theatre in London.
