Plot summary
Mark Schultz fills in for his older brother Dave at a school appearance; both are Olympic gold medalists in wrestling, and Mark feels he lives in Dave's shadow. John E. du Pont, heir to a family fortune and a wrestling enthusiast, flies Mark to his Pennsylvania estate, shows him the private training facility he has built there, and invites him to join his team, Foxcatcher, with a salary while he prepares for the World Championship. Du Pont urges Mark to bring Dave in as well. Dave will not uproot his wife and two children, so Mark settles at the estate on his own. He trains with new teammates, and du Pont calls him a true friend.

- Mark Schultz turned on director Bennett Miller after critics pointed out 'homosexual undertones' in the portrayal of his relationship with du Pont, saying the relationships and personalities were complete fiction, then recanted weeks later, calling Foxcatcher a miracle and apologizing.
- Composer Rob Simonsen recorded most of the score at AIR Studios in London, and after hearing Jacob Cohen play cello at a subway stop platform he brought him in to record the film's cello solos.
- With du Pont's mansion Liseter Hall demolished in January 2013, the production used Morven Park in Leesburg, Virginia for exteriors and Wilpen Hall, an 1899 mansion in Sewickley Heights, Pennsylvania, for the interiors of his estate.
