Biography

Ian Holm was an English actor who came to screen work after years with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Born in Goodmayes, Essex, in 1931, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and first took the stage at Stratford-upon-Avon, going on to play Puck and the fool in King Lear, and Richard III in the BBC's The Wars of the Roses. He won a Tony in 1967 as Lenny in Harold Pinter's The Homecoming, and a supporting BAFTA for The Bofors Gun (1968). His Sam Mussabini in Chariots of Fire (1981) brought a second BAFTA, an Academy Award nomination and a special award at Cannes. He gained notice as the android Ash in Alien (1979) and was Lewis Carroll in Dreamchild (1985). Wider fame came with the elderly Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), and he voiced Chef Skinner in Ratatouille (2007). He was knighted in 1998.
