Plot summary
At a jazz club, a deranged man shoots saxophonist Izzy Maurer in the chest. Izzy comes through a seven-hour operation without his left lung; his playing days are over. He keeps to himself, then accepts a dinner invitation from his former girlfriend Hannah, where he meets the retired actress Catherine Moore, now a director, and the producer Philip Kleinman; Catherine wants an unknown for the role of Lulu in her film of Pandora's Box. On the walk home Izzy comes across a dead body and takes a bag left beside it. Inside is a small box holding a stone marked with red, and when he examines it he hears voices in foreign tongues, and it glows blue and rises above his nightstand. A napkin in the bag bears a number; the woman who answers is Celia Burns, a waitress.

- Paul Auster hoped to cast Salman Rushdie as Dr. Van Horn, but the Teamsters demanded higher wages over the danger of having Rushdie in the cast; the demands could not be met, so Willem Dafoe took the part at short notice.
- Lulu on the Bridge was Paul Auster's directing debut, made after he wrote the script for The Music of Chance and collaborated with director Wayne Wang on Smoke and Blue in the Face.
