David Hemmings
Biography
The English actor, director and producer David Hemmings started out as a boy soprano, singing Benjamin Britten's music and creating the role of Miles in Turn of the Screw in 1954, before turning to films as a child actor. Born in Guildford, Surrey, he became an emblem of Swinging London after Michelangelo Antonioni cast him in the lead of the critically acclaimed Blowup (1966). Leads and major supporting parts followed in Camelot (1967), The Charge of the Light Brigade (1968), Alfred the Great (1969), Juggernaut (1974) and Deep Red (1975), and in 1967 he helped found Hemdale Film Corporation. He moved into directing, and The 14 (1973), his second feature, earned the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival. In America he directed episodes of Magnum, P.I. and The A-Team. Later roles included Gladiator (2000) and Gangs of New York (2002), and among his last screen appearances were Equilibrium (2002) and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003).

Hemmings took his first lead role in Live It Up!, a low budget teen musical released in 1963. He then appeared in support roles for Michael Winner's The System in 1964.
Beyond film
In 1967, Hemmings cut a pop single called Back Street Mirror, penned by Gene Clark, plus a studio album, David Hemmings Happens, in Los Angeles, with instrumental backing from several Byrds members.
Behind the camera
Hemmings filmed two of David Bowie's three 1978 Earls Court concerts, but Bowie disliked the rough cut and the footage was never published.
