Plot summary
An unnamed woman lives among opera, art and shopping, occupied by what she takes to be the large problems of her own days. She becomes aware of world politics, of economic exploitation, and of the consumerism that surrounds her. That change of view comes with a visit to a country whose economy and population are arranged for tourists; there she tastes its products and, through a journalist she meets, learns what stands behind the facade the visitors are shown. He suggests she cross into that country's war-torn neighbor to see life in the region as it is. She makes that journey.

- Playwright Wallace Shawn first performed his monologue The Fever in private homes by appointment rather than in a theater. After moving it to a theater, he dropped the lighting, sets and programs and mingled with the audience beforehand so people would not dismiss it as merely "great theater."
