Plot summary
At a star party in Richmond, Virginia, high school student Leo Biederman photographs an unknown object, and astronomer Marcus Wolf recognizes it as a comet on a path toward Earth. A year later, MSNBC reporter Jenny Lerner looks into the resignation of Treasury Secretary Alan Rittenhouse, who is stocking a boat with food and survival gear; the FBI brings her to President Tom Beck, who asks her to keep quiet in exchange for a role at the press conference he plans. Beck tells the public that the Wolf-Biederman comet will arrive in about a year and could end human life, and that the United States and Russia have assembled a spacecraft, the Messiah, whose crew will try to shift the comet's path with nuclear bombs.
