Plot summary

In Copenhagen, Smilla Jaspersen studies ice crystals in a university laboratory. A transplanted Greenlander, she has unfinished credentials and no job. Coming home one evening, she finds six-year-old Isaiah Christiansen, an Inuk neighbor, dead in the snow below her apartment building. The police say he fell from the roof while playing. She knows the boy dreaded heights, and on the roof his footprints run straight to the edge, as though something had chased him there. Dr. Lagermann tells her that Dr. Johannes Loyen, a prominent professor, carried out the autopsy on a child from a poor family, and Loyen rules the death accidental, so she brings her complaint to the District Attorney. A mechanic in the building offers his help, and her questions lead toward a company that has made several expeditions to Greenland.
