Plot summary
Rose McNulty has been held at the Sligo Regional Mental Hospital for fifty years, ever since the accusation that she killed her baby in 1942. The building is due for demolition, and Dr. Grene, a psychiatrist asked by the local Catholic Church to assess her, hears her insist that she did not kill her child. She tells her story through the pages of a Bible she has covered with writing and drawings, reaching back to her youth. Around 1940, sent from Northern Ireland, she goes to her aunt's house in the Irish Free State, where she draws the attention of local men: Michael, a Protestant who leaves to join the RAF, and Jack, who belongs to an anti-British Catholic group. She also tries to keep clear of Father Gaunt, the parish priest.
