Plot summary
Briony Tallis is thirteen in the summer of 1935, an aspiring writer living at her family's English estate. From a window she watches her older sister Cecilia and Robbie Turner, the son of the family housekeeper, and misinterprets what passes between them. Robbie writes Cecilia a note of apology, but a draft describing his attraction to her goes into the envelope by mistake, and Briony reads it before her sister does. She describes it to her visiting cousin Lola Quincey. At dinner the household learns that Lola's twin brothers have gone missing, and search parties spread across the grounds in the dark. Briony tells everyone that she saw Robbie attack Lola.

- With only two days to film all the Dunkirk beach war scenes and no budget for the 1,000-plus extras they needed, Joe Wright and cinematographer Seamus McGarvey shot the sequence as a single five-and-a-half-minute take following James McAvoy's character a quarter of a mile along the beach.
- Abbie Cornish was pegged to play the 18-year-old Briony but backed out over a scheduling clash with Elizabeth: The Golden Age. Romola Garai was cast instead and had to adapt her performance's physicality to the appearance already decided upon for Saoirse Ronan and Vanessa Redgrave.
- The film re-enacted the real 1940 Balham station disaster in the former Piccadilly line station at Aldwych, which has been closed since the 1990s.
- Joe Wright was 35 when Atonement opened the Venice International Film Festival, making him the youngest director ever to open the Venice event.
