Plot summary
Jean Travers is a middle-aged schoolteacher in Wetherby, a town in West Yorkshire, who has never married. She invites married friends for dinner one evening, and among the guests is a young man named John Morgan, newly arrived and not on her list. He speaks at the table about the emotional pain he carries. The next morning Morgan returns to Jean's cottage with a gift of pheasants. While he waits at her kitchen table for tea, he shoots himself. The guest had walked in with others, each side assuming the other had brought him. Jean's friends include Stanley Pilborough, the town solicitor, and his wife Marcia, her lifelong friend.
