Plot summary
The four women are longtime friends and professional colleagues who sometimes meet at one another's country homes. This time the house is Joan Plowright's, one she once shared with her husband, and the cameras are let in. Over a long summer weekend they look back on careers that ran along parallel lines, on the early years spent on stage performing the classics, and on Cleopatra, a sore point because none of them was ever counted among the profession's classic beauties. They compare notes on acting with their own husbands and with each other's, on what it means to grow old in the business, on their activism during the Vietnam War, and on what the title of Dame means to them.
