Plot summary

A grandmother on a riverboat tells her grandchildren Emma, Alexandra and Edward a story. Tired of spring cleaning, Mole leaves his hole and comes upon a river, where he meets Ratty. The two recognize a shared urge to wander and become friends. They call on Mr. Toad, who has given up the river, and he carries them off with a gypsy caravan. When a motor car goes past, the caravan is wrecked, and the car becomes Toad's new obsession.
