Plot summary
Oscar Wilde, an Irish writer, comes back to London from America and marries Constance Lloyd Wilde in Victorian England. They have two sons, Cyril and Vyvyan. His plays are successful and he makes a lot of money. A young Canadian named Robbie Ross stays with the family, and Wilde begins brief affairs with younger men. On the opening night of his play Lady Windermere's Fan, he meets again the poet Lord Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas, and the two fall in love.

- In a featurette, producer Marc Samuelson confesses casting Stephen Fry in the title role was both a blessing and a problem: everyone agreed he was physically perfect for the part, but his lack of a major presence in films made financing difficult to obtain.
- In the DVD commentary Fry, who is gay, admitted he was nervous about the love scenes with his heterosexual co-stars, and said Jude Law, Michael Sheen and Ioan Gruffudd were quick to put him at ease.
- Orlando Bloom made his film debut here with a brief appearance as a rentboy, in a production that filmed at Knebworth House in Hertfordshire, Magdalen College in Oxford, Lincoln's Inn in Holborn and Somerset House in the Strand.
