Plot summary
Miss Bentley has spent sixteen Aprils at a villa above Lake Como, and in 1937 she returns there to recover from the death of her father, a London society artist. The other English-speaking guests this season are Americans. Major Wilshaw takes a room at the villa and proposes cocktails; she stands him up without thinking, busy helping an Italian family settle a new nanny. Miss Beaumont, a bored young American who left a Swiss finishing school, amuses herself by flirting with the major. His own interest in her revives something dormant since before the Great War, and Miss Bentley discovers in him qualities beyond his ears.
