Plot summary
In the summer of 1900, Leo, thirteen years old, was a guest at a country house belonging to the family of his school friend Marcus Maudsley, who had far more money than he did. He celebrated his thirteenth birthday at the house and became besotted with Marcus's older sister Marian, whom the family hoped to see married to the local landowner, Viscount Trimingham. Marcus fell unwell, so Leo had little to do, and he agreed to ferry secret messages between Marian and Ted Burgess, a tenant farmer nearby. He did not grasp what the messages meant, and the memories of that summer stayed suppressed for decades.
