Plot summary
Sophie is a fact checker for The New Yorker who travels to Verona, Italy, on a pre-honeymoon with her fiancé Victor, a chef preparing to open his own restaurant. Victor spends the trip researching food and leaves Sophie to sightsee on her own. In Juliet's courtyard she learns that women from around the world leave letters to Juliet there and that a group called the Secretaries of Juliet collects and answers them. Sophie finds a letter written in 1957 by Claire Smith, who asked Juliet for guidance about a boy named Lorenzo Bartolini, and writes a reply. Claire, now elderly and widowed, arrives in Verona with her grandson Charlie, and the three set out to look for the Lorenzo of the letter, a search Sophie hopes will help her own writing.
