Plot summary
A traveling lanternist's pictures tell the story. In 19th century England, the farm laborers of a village form a trade union, one of the first, to improve their conditions and win fair wages. George Loveless leads the men, and his younger brother, James Loveless, is among them, as are James Hammett, James Brine, and Young John Stanfield. The squire of Tolpuddle, James Frampton, and the village vicar are figures in the tale.

- Bill Douglas had the screenplay for Comrades ready by 1980, but the film took six years to complete because of difficulties shooting in England and Australia, his own perfectionism and conflicts with his first producer, Ismail Merchant.
- The film tells the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs, who were arrested and transported to Australia in 1834 for trying to improve their conditions by forming an early form of trade union.
- Parts of Comrades were shot in Tyneham, a ghost town in south Dorset that the military took over during the Second World War for use as a training area and which is still part of a large military range.
